{"id":13,"date":"2006-11-01T00:15:36","date_gmt":"2006-11-01T00:15:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/new.tola.me.uk\/blog\/2006\/11\/01\/first-experience-of-x10\/"},"modified":"2006-11-01T00:15:36","modified_gmt":"2006-11-01T00:15:36","slug":"first_experience_of_x10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tola.me.uk\/blog\/2006\/11\/01\/first_experience_of_x10\/","title":{"rendered":"First Experience of X10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#039;ve finally got around to plugging in the X10 home automation kit that arrived in the post last week, courtesy of <a href=\"http:\/\/twistedlemon.co.uk\">the lemon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I ordered the basics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uk-automation.co.uk\/computer-interface-p-996.html\">CM12U<\/a> &#8211; Serial X10 Computer Interface<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uk-automation.co.uk\/wall-dimmer-p-1021.html\">LW10U<\/a> &#8211; X10 Wall Dimmer<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uk-automation.co.uk\/lamp-module-p-3.html\">LM12U<\/a> &#8211; X10 Lamp Module<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So far I&#039;ve plugged the computer interface into a PC, plugged a 20W desk lamp into the lamp module and tried controlling the lamp using bundled Windows software. There was a horrible buzzing sound coming from the lamp module, the lamp only just managed to light up very dimly and playing with the &#8220;dim&#8221; feature resulted in a precarious display of flashing which I thought was going to blow the bulb! I wonder if these problems would be solved by using a different lamp rated higher than 20W, but I&#039;m not really sure what&#039;s causing them.<\/p>\n<p>The equipment completely failed successfully transmit a signal from upstairs to downstairs, possibly struggling to cross between different rings on the house mains.<\/p>\n<p>So far I&#039;m very unimpressed, but I need to learn more about the X10 kit and the way houses are wired in the UK before I make my mind up.<\/p>\n<p>I&#039;m interested to know how much power is wasted by an X10 receiver or transceiver when on standby.<\/p>\n<p><!--break--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#039;ve finally got around to plugging in the X10 home automation kit that arrived in the post last week, courtesy of the lemon.
